Yoshitaka “Gigo” Funakoshi

Yoshitaka Funakoshi (1906 – 1945)

Selvom han døde meget ung havde Yoshitaka Funakoshi (eller Gigo, afhængig af hvordan du læser de 2 kanji tegn som skriver hans navn) Gichin Funakoshi’s 3. søn en stor effekt på moderne Karate.

 

Hvor Gichin Funakoshi var ansvarlig for introduktionen af Karate til Japan og ændre Karate fra kun at være en kampart til at være en kamp-DO (vej i livet) var Yoshitaka Funakoshi teknisk skaber af moderne Karate.

Hvor den gamle ToDe (kina-hånd) lagde vægt på brug af og udvikling af overkroppen, udviklede Yoshitaka Funakoshi nye benteknikker som: Mawashi-geri, Yoko-geri Kekomi, Yoko-geri Keage, Fumikomi og Ushiro-geri. Af andre ændringer var drejning af kroppen til Hanmi, når man blokerer, at skubbe med det bagerste ben samt brug af hofte når en teknik udføres. Ideen for disse ting var at alle teknikker skulle udføres med hele kroppen.

 

Under Yoshitaka Funakoshis ledelse så nye store ændringer dagens lys i årene 1930 og 1935. Disse ændringer var mest på Kumite (kamp) siden, hvor han opfandt gohon-kumite, kihon ippon Kumite og senere Jiyu ippon kumite og sluttelig Jiyu kumite (fri kamp).

 

Desværre for Karateverdenen og som resultat af mange års sygdom og 2. verdenskrigs svære leveforhold døde Yoshitaka Funakoshi i 1945.
